The UK foundations for the International Workstream were laid at the turn of the 20th century when the Comite Technique International de Prevention et d’Extinction du Feu was formed with several other counties. Since that date the UK has maintained a relationship with this international fire and rescue services association.

More recently, and recognising the extensive contribution played by partners outside the fire and rescue service, considerable effort has been made to promote UK interests overseas in areas of trade and investment to both secure economic prosperity and provide service and expertise.

Specific activities include:

  • International co-operation: Continued involvement and dialogue with CTIF to share common interests and influence. In particular, to support best practice in sectors like youth, hazardous materials, access to the European Commission, airports and statistics
  • International standards: Working within established and informal mechanisms to support acceptable international standards that protect the community and offer fair trading conditions. Support for appropriate representation in standard-setting agencies, liaison with parliamentary and regulatory bodies and publication of information in support of the UK approach to fire safety standards.
  • Trade and investment: Promotion of UK interest abroad to help create suitable economic opportunities. Support for attendance at exhibitions, shows, conferences and events that showcase UK quality products and services, and the encouragement of inward trade missions.
  • European Union: Maintain awareness, promotion and reaction to matters occurring and affecting the European Union and its Member States that may impact or affect issues related to fire safety and response to emergencies in both a positive or negative way to ensure the Fire Sector is represented and influential with European Institutions, the Council, Parliament, Commission and Committees.
