Heritage Workstream

Formed in 2015 the Workstream had its first meeting on 5 October at Scotney Castle in Kent. The meeting was well attended by members of the FSF and all attendees gave an update on their heritage fire safety experience and what they could offer this heritage workstream in an effort to support the heritage sector.

Fire Investigation Workstream

The Fire Investigation Workstream is continuing to identify and monitor emerging concerns.One such issue is the Fire Investigation Protocol, a draft of which went out to public consultation in 2013-14.

Enforcement Workstream

The Enforcement Workstream continues to be active in a range of areas. Draft guidance has been written to assist designers and approval bodies achieve consistency in their approach to Fire Compartmentation in Retail Units, particularly where it exceeds the advised limits laid down in ADB.

Built Environment Issues and Affairs Workstream

The BEIA Workstream held a meeting on 13 January to discuss clarity and comprehension of the text in the Guidance in Approved Document B. A survey was distributed via a few of the workstream’s member organisations (IFE, BCA, IFSM, FOA, BWF Certifire, and BWF) to collate responses on the definitions contained within the document.

The All-Party Parliamentary Fire Safety & Rescue Group is an informal cross-party interest group which has been in operation for over 17 years. The FSF has formed a strong relationship with the Group, which is proving to be constructive and positive.

The Marketing Workstream is undertaking a Membership Survey to gain a full understanding of its members’ expectations and gather feedback on the services it provides. The results of the survey will assist in the Federation’s future business planning policy.

Through its membership of CTIF (International Association of Fire and Rescue Services), the FSF has supported a European initiative to improve community resilience across Europe.

Structural Timber Workstream

The Structural Timber Workstream met on 19 January. Issues discussed included partial occupation and fire alarms for buildings under construction. It was agreed that advice on do’s/don’ts on partial occupation would be drafted.

Research & Statistics Workstream

Further discussion concerning obtaining better access to FRS Incident Reporting System data for FSF members has continued. At the Fire and Rescue Statistics User Group meeting on the 18 March, a DCLG-led session on Open Data was held.

The Technology Workstream reported the results of the research project, conducted by BRE Global aimed at identifying the fundamental causes of false fire alarms, utilising a fire alarm industry expert to investigate false alarms as they occurred in the field in the Greater Glasgow area.
